September 26th – Brussels Day 1

Started the day with a little walk about in our area. We are not too far from the Grand Place, which is home to the city hall among other historic buildings. The buildings themselves are pretty impressive with their ornate detailing and imposing height.

Then we carried on down the road to a classic tourist spot Manneken Pis, or “the little peeing man”. This statue is regularly dressed up for special occasions, but today he was au natural.

We carried on our little wander to a square further up that had some nice gardens to walk through. It just so happened that right next to that there was a building with an exhibit on art and happiness, so we thought we would give that a try. Inside was an interactive art exhibit that was mostly lights and mirrors and smoke and projections. It was pretty neat to walk through and honeslty reminded me quite a bit of some of the exhibits in the Moco Museum In Amsterdam.

Next we saw the royal palace (which was under constuction) and then had a bite to eat in the park across the street from it. While we were wandering through the park, we saw more than a dozen statues of this cartoon cat. I guess it’s a big cartoon here, and we had a good time walking up and down, looking at all of this cats shenanigans.

We sort of accidentally ended up in a free exhibit about brussels as a city, but we didn’t stay long since this was not where we had meant to go. Where we had meant to go, and where we eventually got to, was the Musé des Beaux Arts. We had a good couple hours wander through here and I even saw a painting that I recognized as Old Church in Amsterdam before I looked at the name plate. This is especially impressive because the painting was from 1617 and the church still looks like that!

And that was it for me for the day. I was glad I was able to get some more sight seeing in today and I am looking forward to the tasty activities we have for tomorrow!
