September 29th – Travel Day

Today we woke up in Brussels and went to sleep in Vienna, but we actually spent the majority of our day in Germay (on the train all the way across). We hopped on our first train around 8:30am and that train took us from Brussels to Frankfurt. The train ride was about 3 hours and was relatively uneventful. Feeling confident from the day’s easy start, we found some lunch in the train station and then found the platform where our next train was supposed to arrive. The next train was to take us from Frankfurt to Vienna, and was supposed to be about 6 hours long. To start it was 20 minutes late, not a big deal. Then the train was packed, there were so many people with bags that it took us probably 10 minutes just to push and shove our way to our seats. And when we found them, there were people sitting in them. We had a reservation, which you didn’t need, but did mean that the seats were supposed to belong to us for the ride. One of the people in our seat moved right away, but the other guy took some convincing (via gestures because he did not speak english). Finally in our seats, we settled in for the long journey. This journey was made longer by the announcements telling us at each station that we were further and further behind schedule, until we arrived at our destination 75 minutes late. Apart from the delays, the rest of the ride was actually not too bad. The view out the window was quite nice, and the crush of people thinned out the longer we went on. We found our hostel (which is the same company as the one we stayed at in london), and turned in for the night. Who knew sitting all day long could be so exhausting!
