Today we traveled from Vienna to Salzburg. The home of the Sound of Music is only about 2.5 hours from Vienna, and though this train was delayed, we made it with plenty of day left. First we found some lunch and ate it in the Mirabell gardens, which are quite beautiful. We saw some people planting new flowers, and learned later that they plant new flowers as the old ones die year round!

Then we found the marshaling point for our Sound of Music bike tour. This 3.5 hour bike tour took us all over Salzburg to different places that were either actually in the film or were where the locations in the film were based on. The locations we saw included the Mirabell gardens (where the children sing Do Re Mi), the theater that the family sings in (both the movie family and the real family), the square where Maria splashes the horse and where enemy troops occupy, the abby where real Maria trained as a nun and where Julie Andrews sings “I have confidence, both the front and back of the family home (different buildings in real life), and the gazebo from 16 going on 17.

After the bike tour, we got dinner with a girl in our room at the hostel and turned in for the night. Salzburg is super beautiful, and one day was not enough, so I’m sure I’ll be back.
