October 7th – Prague Day 3

Today we went to Prague castle. Apparently it is still a working castle, so we couldn’t go into the whole thing, but there were lots of places for us to explore. We saw a little bit of the changing of the guard, the cathedral, a large hall, and golden lane, which is where there were a bunch of tiny houses and shops. There was also a tower that used to be a prison at the end. No one lives in the houses anymore (and good thing because people were a lit shorter back then) but now there’s an armor display and some trinket shops in them. We also did the palace gardens, but as it’s getting colder, they weren’t much to write home about.

After our tour of the castle, I had a Trdelník with ice cream (imagine an ice cream cone, but the cone is a churro), and then we went to the museum of Alchemy and magic. The museum was two parts, first we could look around two rooms on the ground floor which had some blurbs about what Alchemy is as well as a few interactive props. The second half of the tour was a guided tour of the upstairs, which used to be the house of an alchemist. It’s all dressed up for tours now, but the alchemists really lived there and did experiments there. Our guide gave us some info on the two alchemists who lived there and their different experiments attempting to create gold. Our guide also gave us some insight into the personal lives of the alchemists (not always stand up guys), and explained that once science became more widely available, Alchemy pretty much died.

After the tour, we had a drink and some food at the bar associated with the museum, and my hawaiianuculus (blue hawaiian) came in a smoking beaker! There was another drink we saw someone else get that was actually on fire.

We spent the evening admiring the view of the city, wandering about seeing the twinkling lights, and getting ready to travel tomorrow.
