October 5th – Prague Day 1

We were a little tired from yesterday’s excitement with the trains, so we slept in a bit today. When we did eventually get up, our first activity of the day was a Lego museum! I didn’t know this before, but apparently Lego was founded in Denmark, and the first Lego manufacturing facility outside of Denmark was here in Czechia. The museum had a bunch of info about how Lego got its start, as well as lots of kits that had been built, mini figures, and some original builds of buildings here in Prague.

Next we did a little shopping as we made our way down to the old town square. This is where the town hall is, which houses a huge astronomical clock tower. First we went up to the top of the clock tower and looked out over the square and the city. After that, we had a guided tour of the basement of the building. We walked through what was once the street level rooms, that then became cellars when the street level was raised, and our guide talked us through what the building had been used for over the years. Originally it was a private residence, that was then bought by the city board to build a town hall. During WWII it was a base for the Czech uprising, and they used the cellars which had tunnels out to bring in equipment and served as a temporary hospital. It is now the city’s town hall again, and there was even a wedding happening while we were there.

For dinner today, we went to a roof top restaurant right across from the clock tower called Terasa U Prince. Our Dinner was yummy and the view was even better.

To finish off the evening, we attended the black light theater. We didn’t really know a lot about it going in, but it had been recommended to us so we gave it a try. The show we went to was magic themed, which meant that the modern dances that were done in colour costumes under black light, were broken up by little interludes of a family who was comedically bad at magic. All in all a bit of a weird show, not bad, but kinda weird. A busy first day in Prague and still lots left on the list of things to do here!
