October 17th – Barvcelona Day 1

Back in Barcelona! And this time the picture of health (unlike last year). Today was a busy day too. We started the day with some shopping, but not just any shopping, shopping with a slide! We had seen on Instagram that there is a Sephora store that has a slide entrance so we had to check it out.

It was honestly very fun, I think more stores should have slides. And the marketing worked too, because I bought a lip gloss while we were there.

Next we went down to La Rambla. We did a little wander up and down, but honeslty it felt like there was less than last year. Maybe a time of year thing. What was cool is that the market off of la Rambla that was closed last year was open today, so we checked that out and got some gelato.

Last stop of the day was Casa Milá, one of Antoni Gaudi’s designs. It was designed to be a private residence, but the people who lived there actually ended up renting out parts of it. There was an audioguide that explained how Gaudi was inspired my nature and incorporated that into all his designs. The attic (one of my favourite parts) had been designed with a lot of arches that looked like a whale rib cage, so said the audioguide (although they had a lot of arches and Google says whales on have 18 ribs so…). Not to mention, every single arch in the place is a different height!

Apparently Gaudi also designed a lot of the furniture that went into the houses and his big thing was ergonomics. When he made doorknobs he just grabbed a piece of clay and then made a handle that was that shape so it was easy to grab.

The roof was the other main attraction of the place. It’s very uneven (due to the arches height differences) but there lots of cool structures to see on the top, some with tile on them for decoration. And of course it provided a nice view of the city and Sagrada Familia.

After our busy day, I still had some evening plans. I went to the family dinner that our hostel offers, which tonight was soup, lasagna, and a custard style dessert. And of course Sangria! I met some nice people and the food was super tasty. After dinner I went on the “night walking tour” which is really a pub crawl. I had wanted to experience some of the night life last time but hadn’t been feeling well enough, so this time I was determined. There was a big group of us that left all together and I very quickly met 3 other girls on the tour who were super friendly and an awesome group for the night. We also had a guide from the hostel who took us to each of the places and made sure we all stayed together. The tour was lots of fun, we danced all night long!
